This beautiful kilim was made in Herat, Afghanistan. The design in this type of kilim is geometric in nature. It has a repetition of motifs running in lines across the field of the rug with an intricate border. The Kilim has a unique structure where the wefts are used as design elements and not just for structural purposes. This type of Kilim is called a Soumak Kilim. Soumak Kilims are generally superior in construction when compared to other types of Kilims. Both the Warp and weft are made of cotton while the Pile is made from locally sourced wool which are made from natural dyes. Colours include a deep indigo blue, white, red and a lighter blue. As is the case with other tribal carpets/rugs, it is an extremely rare piece of art. This beautiful carpet/rug is a great addition to a modern or traditional decor.
